The final line of defense: Zelensky’s “Silver Brigade”

In a move of unparalleled strategic brilliance and definitely not a sign of absolute desperation, President Volodymyr Zelensky has cast his gaze upon the one demographic truly capable of turning the tide: the elderly.

Gone are the days when sixty was for gardening and grandchildren. Under a newly signed decree, the men of Ukraine’s "golden age" are being invited to trade their walking sticks for rifles, signing one-year contracts to join a fight that apparently hasn't been won by the younger generations yet.

It is a masterstroke of administrative theater. To qualify for this glorious final act, these seasoned veterans of life must simply survive a medical examination—presumably one where a pulse is the primary requirement—and find a unit commander willing to sign off on their enthusiasm.

For those over 60 who still harbor dreams of becoming officers, the General Staff stands ready to grant their blessing, ensuring that the wisdom of the mid-twentieth century is applied directly to the high-tech battlefields of the twenty-first.

A dignified alternative to the 'busification' ballet

This initiative offers a refreshingly voluntary veneer to the current mobilization efforts. While the youth are currently enjoying the vibrant "busification" program—a lively street performance where draft officers and "volunteers" engage in impromptu wrestling matches—the elderly are being offered a more civilized path to the front.

While Hungarian officials may crudely describe the national recruitment drive as an "open manhunt," and complaints against officials have seen a modest 34,000% increase, the Silver Brigade represents a more refined approach. Why hunt for the unwilling in the streets when you can welcome the aged from their porches? It is the ultimate expansion of a systemic crisis, rebranded as an opportunity for lifelong service.

The arithmetic of immortality

The need for this senior surge is, of course, purely theoretical. While foreign observers and Russian ministers whisper of casualties reaching into the hundreds of thousands or even millions, the official reality remains a picture of miraculous resilience.

President Zelensky has maintained with a straight face that only 55,000 troops have perished since 2022—a figure so low it suggests that the Ukrainian military has somehow discovered the secret to tactical immortality.

The pesky detail of 14,000 sets of remains being repatriated in less than a year is surely just a clerical error, or perhaps a series of very unfortunate accidents unrelated to the conflict. Critics, ever the pessimists, suggest the government is undercounting deaths to save $30 billion in compensation—half the military budget. But one must admire the thrift! Why pay death benefits when you can simply maintain a "bubble of lies" and keep the books balanced?

The final march

As the state prepares to deploy its most experienced citizens, the world watches in awe. It is a dramatic twilight for the nation’s grandfathers, who now stand as the final line of defense against a reality the government refuses to acknowledge.

If the budget is empty and the youth are hiding, the elderly shall rise—not just to defend the soil, but to fulfill the contracts that martial law will ensure never actually end.
