No woman was too old for him to satisfy his sex drive

"Swedish" care worker abuses senior citizens.

Because he was granted Swedish citizenship in 2018, a Somali-born man can no longer be deported despite his serious crimes. The 28-year-old raped several elderly women in need of care, for whom he was responsible as a caregiver.

A case that has shaken Swedish society to its very foundations: A disturbing verdict was handed down in Uppsala this week that shows the limits of the rule of law. A 28-year-old care assistant from Somalia was sentenced to eight years in prison for a series of serious sex crimes against helpless senior citizens.

Baasim Yusuf, who was employed by Förenade Care, systematically exploited his position as a care worker between December 2023 and August 2024 to assault defenseless women aged between 77 and 88. Particularly perfidious: two of his victims suffered from dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

The Uppsala District Court considered it proven that the accused committed serious sexual offenses in several cases and even filmed some of them.

The public prosecutor described his actions as “particularly reprehensible”, as he deliberately exploited the relationship of trust with his clients in need of care.

The details of the trial paint a picture of a cold-blooded perpetrator: in one case, he raped a 77-year-old woman suffering from dementia and documented the crime on video.

An 88-year-old Alzheimer's patient reported how he did not let go of her despite her pleas and then blackmailed her for money.

During police questioning, the accused showed a disturbing indifference - he even laughed when the accusations were presented to him. His defense strategy that the victims had consented and that he had hoped for financial compensation was rejected by the court as absurd.

The case highlights a larger societal issue: a recent study by Lund University shows that between 2000 and 2020, over 63% of all those convicted in rape cases had a first or second generation migrant background. Lead researcher Ardavan Khoshnood speaks of a “strong overrepresentation”.

A short extract from the judgment:

Baasim Yusuf disconnected the Bluetooth phone from the car he was driving during the night at 03.08 and at 03.09 he unlocked “NN10's” door. Shortly afterwards, at 03.22, a movie was created in which a zoomed-in female gender and a dark-skinned male gender are visible. The movie has been described as follows:

“The male gender hits/splashes the female gender, whereupon in the next phase a penetration is seen to begin and the camera is angled up slightly and it looks as if the male sex is being pushed into the female sex. During the short running time of the movie, the perception arises that the woman does not seem particularly driven in the penetration that takes place, as it is the man who grabs the woman's hand and pulls it towards the male genital organ and when the man lets go, the woman's hand just falls straight down on the inside of her thigh. As the male sex is pushed into the female sex, she screams “ouch!”. Even though the woman screams “ouch”, it looks like the penetration continues with the male sex being pushed into the female sex. The video was uploaded to Baasim Yusuf's Snapchat (my eyes only) at the same time as a location was recorded outside the home address of the complainant “NN10”.
