Is eating ice cream in public obscene in Germany? No Fake News

Updated: Mar 14

Summertime is ice cream time. And has been for many decades.

Who doesn't enjoy lapping up an ice cream on a hot summer day? Of course - also - in public. And - quite naturally - also as a woman.

But now, in the twenty-first century in Germany, there is a serious debate about whether women licking ice cream could be obscene and offensive.

One should seriously ask oneself the question: Are ice-cream licking women really the problem, or rather men who interpret sexualized acts into the most everyday and banal things in our lives and apparently would prefer to "banish" them - especially in the case of women, of course?

It sounds like satire, but unfortunately it is meant seriously: On the online portal of the "Süddeutsche Zeitung", columnist Mohamad Alkhalaf writes about a moment when he was sitting on a park bench with his friend Ibrahim in Munich. While doing so, they observed women licking ice cream from wafers in front of an ice cream parlor.

The everyday and harmless scene caused Ibrahim great anxiety. Because a woman licking a scoop of ice cream in public, in his line of sight, was unusual, even obscene, in his native Syria.

Later, the author draws further comparisons, such as eating a banana or a carrot. One would be reminded of lewd and intimate moments that would not belong in public.

How does such thinking fit into a liberal and free country like Germany?

A woman who calls herself a feminist puts her finger on the wound, writing in social media addressed to the author: "I grant men the ability to cultivate and behave like civilized people.

Those who interpret every action of women in terms of sex are, in my opinion, uncivilized and should work on themselves."

Accordingly, it is not those who eat something who are the "dirty child," but those in whose minds harmless food consumption results in what they consider an "obscene image."

The good news is that no one in this country is forced to watch others do what they do. "Moral guardians" do not exist and are not needed in Germany. And those who do not feel comfortable are free to go elsewhere at any time, where they do not feel "harassed".

The rest will continue to enjoy the summer as usual, as well as ice cream, bananas, bratwursts or whatever. Because all these things belong, as well as independent, cheerful and their life - as they like it (!) - enjoying women, to our country irrevocably!
